Mayo Roscommon Hospice invites people to memorial walk and tree-lighting ceremony

Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation is asking people to support Shine A Light for Hospice this November and December to help raise funds for vital palliative care services in both Mayo and Roscommon.

On Sunday, November 27, at 6.30 p.m., Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation will hold their annual tree-lighting ceremony in the Pope Francis Plaza, Main Street, Knock. People are invited to remember a loved one, living or deceased, and share in the Shine A Light ceremony either in person or online.

The foundation’s special memorial walk will take place on the same evening and will start at 5 p.m. from St. John's Rest and Care Centre, finishing at the plaza in Knock in time for the tree-lighting ceremony.

If you would like to take part in the memorial walk, log on to www.hospice.ie/memorialwalk or call (094) 9388666. The closing date for personalised t-shirts is November 11.

During the ceremony, loved ones who have passed away or indeed those who have been going through a challenging time will be remembered. Prayers and music will be offered for those being remembered.

You can purchase a special Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation Shine A Light card in a loved one's name by logging on to www.hospice.ie/shop or by calling (094) 9388666.

All those names will be entered into the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation’s Book of Remembrance for the special ecumenical service on the third Sunday in January.

Commenting, Martina Jennings, CEO of Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation, said: “Our Shine A Light ceremony is a beautiful evening where people join together and remember those people in our lives who have passed or who are going through a difficult time. It is an opportunity to stop and take a moment from the hustle and bustle of daily life and remember what is important to us.

“This year, the ceremony will be preceded by our candlelit memorial walk, a very special event where people walk in memory of their loved one.

“Here at Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation, we have many things to be grateful for this year. Our palliative teams are as busy as ever, both in the Mayo Hospice and in the communities, and our Roscommon Hospice is due to open shortly to patients and their families. We are so grateful to communities across both counties as without their support we couldn’t continue to fund this vital service.”

The tree lighting ceremony will also be live streamed on November 27 at 6 p.m. on the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Facebook page so people can join in from their own homes. Visit www.hospice.ie for further details.
