Stage is set for a hair-raising Halloween event in Mayo

Horror in the Barracks is a hair-raising Halloween event which takes place in the military barracks in Castlebar this bank holiday weekend, October 29 and 30.

Horror in the Barracks was first established in 2019, with continued success ever since.

The event is organised by a group of enthusiastic volunteers who believe in helping those in need, whilst supporting the creative arts, sporting and charitable organisations within the area.

These groups all aim to promote and build stronger, healthier, happier communities.

The scene is set at the entrance to the event where visitors go through a spooky maze where there are numerous creepy characters lurking and primed to scare.

Next, move through a series of eerily decorated rooms inside the barracks building, each with a different scary theme.

This year's event and monies raised will go towards supporting Ballyheane FC pitch development, Castlebar Pantomime, Tidy Towns, Castlebar Mitchels LGFC, TY students from St. Gerald’s College, Breaffy LGFA, Castlebar Community Cleanup, DLS Castlebar and the Men's Shed, Castlebar.

The charity partner will be Mayo Mental Health Association (MMHA).

Johanne Gibbons, resource officer for MMHA, said: “It’s fantastic to be part of this amazing community project while highlighting the work of Mayo MHA.”

Noel Tuffy, organising committee member, explained: “This year’s spooktacular event will start on Saturday at 6 p.m. and run to 10 p.m. with so many brilliant scary themes throughout the barracks. So early booking is advised.”

On Sunday, October 30, there will be a special toned-down session from 5 to 7 p.m. for children under 12 who must be accompanied by a parent. From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. the event is not suitable for children under 12.

Access the event through the Mall entrance to the barracks. Car parking is available nearby in castle street car park and in the car park in Pavilion Road.

Please see Facebook Horror in the Barracks for further details.

Tickets are available through Eventbrite only and cost €15 per person or €50 for a family of four.
