Michael Lennon, managing director of Westport Woods Hotel, is keen to highlight how water conservation has helped his business.

Exploring the infinite possibilities of science in our everyday lives

To celebrate Science Week in the north-west, Irish Water and friends are taking to the airwaves with Tommy Marren on Midwest Radio next Wednesday (November 16) to explore the infinite possibilities of science in our everyday lives, inspiring new opportunities and providing potential solutions.

Science Week is an annual week-long event supported by the Science Foundation Ireland. Science Week 2022 is taking place nationwide from November 13 to November 20, celebrating science in our everyday lives.

During the two-hour show (9 to 11 a.m.), Tommy will chat to scientists and other experts from Irish Water, Atlantic Technological University, National Federation of Group Water Schemes, Clean Coasts and local businesses.

As part of Science Week, listeners will have the opportunity to find out more about how they can protect their local natural environment by conserving water, minimising the use of pesticides, encouraging biodiversity and safeguarding their local rivers, lakes and beaches.

Speaking about the show, Michael Lennon, managing director of Westport Woods Hotel and member of the Irish Hotel Federation’s sustainability committee, is keen to highlight how water conservation has helped his business. The hotel was one of the first businesses in the north-west to take the Irish Water ‘water conservation pledge’ and has a long history of implementing environmentally friendly practices while winning several awards along the way.

Michael said: “Conserving water not only helps protect your local supply, it can also protect the environment, boost your reputation as a business, and very importantly reduce your bills.”

As part of the programme, participants will be sharing their personal stories on what sparked their journey and career into science and safeguarding their local water supply and natural environment.

Professor Frances Lucy from Atlantic Technological University will also be interviewed on the show and speak about her love of science, how she got involved in education, and flying the flag for female scientists around the county.

Frances explains: “Science Week is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate science in our everyday lives. The natural environment in the west of Ireland is so varied; we have many special habitats to enjoy, learn about and protect. Science Week is a great occasion to take some time to come together and inspire new opportunities and provide potential solutions for use in our day to day lives to help conserve and protect our natural environment.”
