More good news for west Mayo town on 'fantastic day'

Transportation Infrastructure Ireland (TII) have agreed to allow the publication of the various route options for a segregated greenway through Newport town centre.

The news has been confirmed by Councillor Peter Flynn.

He elaborated: "While the greenway has had a massive positive impact on the town as is, the reality is that the greenway finished on both edges of town with cyclists and pedestrians taking their lives in their hands at times navigating through the town centre.

"The route options will look at potential options to allow safe passage through town and from what I understand it will also look at trail head options for the greenway, including designated parking.

"Once published in a few weeks time all of you will have an opportunity to have their say so I am urging you all to review the various options and have your say.

"While all of this is fantastic news for Newport it doesn’t solve the safety issues on Georges St in the short term.

"My council colleagues and I are continuing to push TII who have full control and responsibility for this street/road to implement some short term safety measures."

The news comes on a day on which Newport was also allocated €5.6 million for rural regeneration works.

These will include very significant enhancements to key streets in and the development of an Enterprise & Tourism Hub.
