Mobile BreastCheck unit set to return to Mayo hospital site

A Mayo TD has been informed that the removal of the mobile Breast Check Unit from Mayo University Hospital is temporary and it will be reinstated in December.

Deputy Alan Dillon questioned the HSE on the removal of the unit from the grounds of Mayo University Hospital on October 17 last.

In a response from the CEO of the National Screening Service, Fiona Murphy said: “BreastCheck has temporarily paused breast screening at the hospital from October.

"This is due to construction works taking place at the site, which are outside of our control.

"The mobile unit will move to screen women on the grounds of Nenagh General Hospital during this time but will return to screen women in Castlebar and surrounding locations in December.”

Ms. Murphy said they have contacted all women whose appointments have been cancelled due to the paused and apologised for any inconvenience caused.

“Any woman whose appointment was cancelled in Castlebar due to the construction works will be reinvited for screening when it resumed there in December. The mobile unit will remain in Castlebar until Summer 2023.

“I am satisfied to receive confirmation that the BreastCheck screening unit will return to Castlebar once construction works finish on the site in December," he added.
