Jury fails to agree verdict in Mayo garda murder trial

A JURY in the trial of a man accused of the murder of Mayo Detective Garda Colm Horkan has failed to agree a verdict.

Stephen Silver (46) from Foxford admitted that he shot Garda Horkan in Castlerea in June 2020, but denied murder, pleading guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

The jury in the case had deliberated for over eight hours when Mr. Justice Paul McDermott was told they could not agree a verdict.

Subsequently, the case was adjourned to December 9 to set a date for a retrial, RTÉ has reported.
