Households in Mayo abandoning bin service
SOME people are abandoning their bin collection service as the cost of living crisis continues to bite.
More and more people have discontinued with a collection service, Councillor Gerry Murray highlighted at a meeting of Mayo County Council's environment committee.
He has received complaints about people burning waste as they moved to backyard burning or even disposing of waste in solid fuel cookers.
The council, he said, had passed by-laws where they can ask people to show how they are disposing of their waste.
He asked if the council is carrying out any inspections of people who are not availing of a bin collection service.
“There are more and more complaints coming in,” he stated.
“I would share some concerns,” the council's head of environment, climate change and agriculture, Martin Keating, told him.
Cost of living issues are putting pressure on people's compliance levels.
There is a programme of inspections and this was something they would be building into their inspections planning for next year.
