A Columbarium wall put in place by Kerry County Council.

Dedicated space needed in Mayo cemeteries for cremated remains

A POLICY to cater for people who choose cremation needs to be put in place at Mayo's burial grounds.

A Columbarium wall, where ashes could be placed, was suggested at a meeting of the council's environment committee during a discussion on burial grounds in the county.

Councillor Gerry Murray said he has received representations with regards cremation where a family do not have an existing burial plot, and they have asked for a wall, in which ashes can be placed.

The council needs to devise a policy, he suggested, as more people choose cremation.

Councillor Blackie Gavin supported the wall proposal, saying other local authorities have them around the county.

Undertakers in the county town have been making representations to councillors about having this facility, he added.
