Facility upgrade works commence at Mayo airport

WORK has commenced on resurfacing and upgrading parts of the car parking facilities at Ireland West Airport.

Essential maintenance works are also taking place in the upstairs Sláinte Restaurant area of the airport.

The works will take place on a phased basis between December and March to ensure minimum disruption to passengers and users of the airport during the winter period.

The car park enhancement works include new tarmacadam surfacing to the entirety of car park Zone B and resurfacing and reconfiguration works to car park Zone C.

While works are ongoing, particularly in the car park, passengers and members of the public using the airport are advised some airport parking zones will be closed to facilitate completion of the works, however there will be ample parking spaces available in the other existing areas of the airport car park.

In a statement, the airport apologised for any inconvenience caused.

When completed the works will provide for a further enhanced experience for airport users and provide flexibility to allow for increased capacity as the airport continues to grow passenger numbers.

Joe Gilmore, managing director, Ireland West Airport, commented: “As the airport continues to recover from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, this winter we are pleased to commence works on a number of important construction projects aimed at further improving the airport's facilities and services for our customers.

“The projects, which will be completed using the services of locally based contractors, are planned for completion in time for a busy summer 2023 season.

“2022 will see the airport return to 90% of our pre pandemic passenger numbers, with 720,000 passengers expected to use the airport by year end. Next year we are expecting to grow passenger numbers further and to facilitate this expansion we are enhancing and improving areas like our car parks to ensure we continue to provide the very best facilities for our loyal customer base.”
