Treacherous roads across Mayo this morning

ROAD conditions across Mayo are treacherous this morning.

Motorists are being advised not to travel unless absolutely essential.

There are numerous reports of vehicles going off the road overnight and this morning after freezing temperatures followed rainfall to leave roads in icy condition.

In Charlestown, a lorry skidded on black ice and landed through the front of O'Donnell's totalhealth Pharmacy overnight. Nobody was seriously injured.

The pharmacy is open for business but under a limited capacity, offering a prescription service and over the counter medicines.

Mayo County Council, in an update this morning, asked people to avoid using the roads and where necessary to travel, please exercise extreme caution.

Gritters will continue their work where safe to do so.

Westport Gardaí are advising that at least 11 vehicles have left the road in the Ayle area of Westport in the past number of hours, Midwest Radio is reporting.

The message from Gardaí is that you are risking life and limb driving this morning- so if your journey is not essential stay at home for a few hours.

Ballina Gardaí are reporting similar treacherous conditions with the road at Straide along the N58 almost impassable, the same at Muddy Burns on the main Sligo road.
