Remembering Martin Keane and the poor of Mayo
by Auld Stock
I AM pleased the annual Christmas appeal for the poor of Westport, initiated some years ago by the late Councillor Martin Keane, is going ahead this year.
Martin Keane was a man with a strong social conscience who had a great love for the poor and downtrodden.
He felt there was an onus on us all to help those people who in the hurly-burly of modern life may be unwittingly forgotten.
Martin saw his role as an urban councillor to help those in need. He carried out this role in a quiet, unobtrusive fashion and always had the full support of his fellow councillors.
Martin, in essence, was a charitable man and a good Christian.
He is remembered with respect by all those who knew him over the years.
He is gone but not forgotten.
As in former years, his annual Christmas appeal deserves the same support it has received in the past.
The best way to remember Martin Keane and the poor of Westport is that the appeal receives maximum support.
