New west Mayo art work is testimony to a bright future
A wonderful piece of art on the Castlebar Road in Westport between the Sacred Heart School and Rice College has been unveiled.
This is the outcome of a short, yet highly productive art product run by Macluí and facilitated by long-time community artist and educator Steph Troy.
The work came out of an exploration of street art, muralism and graffiti with a group of 16 participants from the three secondary schools in Westport and Louisburgh.
The street is indeed the most democratic of art spaces and the perfect vehicle for creative expression.
The process and product of this work is a celebration of inclusiveness, diversity, identity and joyous expression! What looks at first like a random series of shapes, is actually a space containing everyone of the young participants tags (names).
They worked together towards a process of abstraction that brought the collective into a harmonious unified one.
Inspired by a controversial discussion about fruit on Pizza, the group’s work evolved from that starting point into an exploration of contrast, diversity, pattern, collaboration and celebration.
This piece is ultimately a celebration of positive youthful energy and this group of artists have an abundance of it.
As this painting is surely a testimony a bright future.
