Mast proposal for north Mayo community is appealed

A PROPOSAL by Eircom to erect a mast to improve phone and internet services in the Geesala area is under appeal.

The company is looking to erect an 18-metre monopole telecommunications structure at the eir exchange in Gweesalia.

A planning application submitted to Mayo County Council was approved. However, that decision has now been appealed to An Bord Pleanála by a number of parties.

The company, in its application, set out how the village main street and much of the surrounding area only receives 'fringe' 4G coverage. Current customer demand is not being met and the structure is needed to address this.

It was also submitted that the structure would not make a significant visual impact on the coastline, replacing an existing 15-metre monopole.

A number of local residents voiced concern to council planners about the mast, with a petition submitted by Geesala Community Group.

Concerns raised included the fact the existing, smaller mast is already an eyesore in the middle of a small village and any new structure should be located away from homes and people's places of work.

There was also concern about the health implications of masts.

A decision is due from the appeals board by May.
