Rescue from cliffs near Mayo lighthouse

A RESCUE from cliffs near Ballyglass lighthouse in north Mayo took place yesterday.

Ballyglass RNLI, on its social media, reported that a member of the public alerted them to an individual trapped on a ledge close to Ballyglass lighthouse.

The volunteer crew of the ILB Clann Lir launched at 3.35 p.m. and were on the scene within five minutes.

They reported: 'After a careful assessment of the situation and due to the inaccessibility to the casualties due to the steepness of the cliffs a decision was made to await the incoming Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 118 from Sligo, which was only minutes away. Soon after it arrived on scene they lifted the casualties to safety. The casualties were transferred to the local Coastguard unit for assessment.'

The ILB and crew were then stood down.

They extended thanks to R118, Ballyglass Coast Guard Unit, and all involved.

If you see anyone in difficulty on or near the water dial 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
