Concern as loggerhead turtles are being washed ashore in Mayo

Concerns are being raised over loggerhead turtles being blown off course and washing ashore along the western coastline.

Gemma O'Connor has reported on her Facebook page that our cold sea water stuns them and they appear dead - though may be still alive.

She said: "If you come across a turtle locally that isn’t moving, gently touch near eye for a reflex.

"If you get a reflex bring it to your nearest vet immediately and please and call Oceanworld Aquarium, Dingle.

"Log your sightings of any turtles you find please even if decayed to this website.

"If you can’t bring to a vet, let me know so I can get it off the beach asap as those first few hours are critical. Dingle aquarium will take them for rehabilitation.

"Don’t try to warm it up yourself.

"Thanks George and Siobhan Leigh for letting me know about this little one (pictured)."
