Memories exhibition by Elaine Mears returns to the Linenhall Centre this week.

Memories returns to the Linenhall Arts Centre

Elaine Mears will bring her Memories exhibition back to the Linenhall Arts Centre from today (Tuesday) until Saturday, January 28.

The workshops will be from 12 to 3 p.m. today and Saturday, January 28, and on Friday from 10 a.m. to 1p.m.

Supported by the Irish Hospice Foundation and Creative Ireland, Elaine and fellow textile artist Marie Murray will be running workshops to coincide with the exhibition.

The work is inspired by the question: 'If you could only keep one object that has sentimental value to you, what would you keep, and why?'

The exhibition is a culmination of the collection of memories from people in Mayo which have been infused into a tapestry for the senses. It seeks to explore the significance we place on items and the memories an everyday item can evoke. It includes representations of people’s precious objects, recordings of stories, smells, and blended materials which combine to bring all the memories together in one place.

“This work was exhibited for the first time last year and it provoked a very strong reaction from people, especially those who were experiencing bereavement, grief, and end of life. As a result, I decided to remount it and offer workshops to enable people to channel their feelings into something creative in a supportive environment,” said Elaine.

In the workshops participants will create their own personalised keepsake which responds to the same question. They will be guided in experimenting with a range of different techniques, including sewing, embroidery, painting and printing on fabric. All materials will be supplied.

If participants have a special object or photograph they’d like to use as inspiration, they are encouraged to bring it with them and they can explore ways to incorporate the meaning of this into their piece. There will be tea, coffee, biscuits, and caring and supportive conversations.

The exhibition is free to attend and there is a nominal €10 charge to participate in a workshop. Discounts are available for those who request.
