'Outrageous' timescale - six years to build nine houses in Mayo village

IT is going to take six-and-a-half years to build nine homes in Carnacon.

That's the timescale since the first site inspection and their scheduled completion date in 2024.

The 'outrageous' situation was by highlighted by Councillor Al McDonnell at a Castlebar Municipal District meeting this week.

The site for the local authority scheme was first inspected in February 2018 - five years ago, he explained.

At their December meeting councillors were told the finishing date was in quarter one of 2024. That has now been pushed out further to quarter three of 2024.

That means, if it goes to schedule, it will have taken six-and-a-half years, which was 'outrageous'.

Documentation is with the department, said Councillor McDonnell, and a decision from them is overdue.

He asked council management to make contact with the authorities in Dublin over the matter.

Delivering the nine-house project is crucial for the future of the local national school, he explained. And potential applicants are making enquiries about the availablity of the homes.
