Multi-storey car park idea to be explored for west Mayo town

EXPRESSIONS of interest in developing a multi-storey car park in Westport are to be sought.

The suggestion that the idea be explored came from cathaoirleach Councillor Christy Hyland at a Westport-Belmullet Municipal District meeting.

With the new N5 opening soon, he said expressions of interest should be sought with a view to having a multi-storey facility at the Mill Street car park.

At weekends and over the summer the town doesn't have enough spaces for parking, said Councillor Hyland.

“Let's put it out there,” he suggested.

The town is developing all the time, and there will be more people and traffic coming into town faster now.

They needed to put parking and traffic top of the agenda.

Councillor Peter Flynn said his colleague had raised a very valid concern.

The Mill Street car park is underutilised. And they didn't have any land on the outskirts of town to look at for a park and ride facility.

They needed to consider all the options.
