Two call-outs for rescue teams on Mayo mountains

RESCUE teams have responded to assist walkers in difficulty on two Mayo mountains.

On Sunday, Mayo Mountain Rescue were tasked to assist a solo walker on Maumtrasna who was exhausted and lost in poor weather conditions.

Less than half an hour later, at 3.40 p.m., a second call came in from Croagh Patrick where a member of the public requested help for a young walker struggling to descend without footwear.

As two members were deployed to Croagh Patrick, a former team member who was on the mountain confirmed the person had successfully descended by themselves.

Galway MRT, and also R118, were asked to assist on Maumtrasna due to its urgency, as weather conditions were poor.

On its social media, Mayo MRT reported that the teams liaised in Tourmakeady. The casualty was able to click on a phonefind text message so they could pin down their location.

With weather improving, with better visibility, but light fading fast, a stretcher party with personnel from both teams was deployed to provide support if the casualty required to be stretchered off. This was challenging on uneven ground.

In a search in very poor conditions, the casualty, who was severely hypothermic with an altered level of consciousness, was located. They were treated for hypothermia and airlifted to Mayo University Hospital by R118.

Mayo Mountain Rescue Team has extended thanks to all who assisted with both call-outs.
