Welcoming the news, Minister of Stare Dara Calleary said “This very significant funding and will enable a lot of positive works to be undertaken throughout the county.

"The type of projects being funded include cycle schemes, footpath repairs and refurbishment, local transport plans and safety measures in the vicinity of schools.

“I congratulate Mayo County Council on securing this funding and look forward to the works being carried out in an efficient manner – much of these works will greatly assist in making our towns, villages and schools safer places to be in active in,” he said.

Deputy Alan Dillon said: “This substantial investment will fund 46 Active Travel projects in the County, contributing to the development of new and improved walking and cycling infrastructure by 2025.

"This includes the development of segregated cycle lanes and widened footpaths, new walking and cycling bridges, and new pedestrian crossings. “

Deputy Michael Ring said this funding represents a substantial investment in the walking and cycling infrastructure for Mayo.

The Active Travel funding will ensure that the Safe Routes to School programme will continue to provide safer cycling and walking facilities for many more schools.

“Although Greenways are a proven tourist amenity, they also improve travel in our local communities for residents, connecting our infrastructure and making it safer for us all to enjoy,” added Deputy Ring.

Senator Lisa Chambers stated: "This investment shows a strong commitment to promoting sustainable and active travel options in Mayo, and I eagerly anticipate the results of these projects in the coming months and years."

Ballinrobe based Councillor Michael Burke has welcomed the announcement of almost €800,000 for the South Mayo Area through the Active Travel Investment Grants Scheme.

He said he was delighted to be able to confirm that Ballinrobe Urban Greenway is to receive €465,000, Cong National School is to receive €300,000 and Ballinrobe Community School is to receive €14,000.

"This scheme is all about giving people safe alternative active methods to travel to school and around their area.

"The extensive work being undertaken by the Active Travel team in the Council will help improve the health and wellbeing of our communities and make them more accessible and attractive for everyone.

"I thank Deputy Michael Ring and Minister Hildegarde Naughton for their support on this matter,” he stated.
