South Mayo assault incident condemned - appeal for information

PUBLIC representatives in south Mayo have condemned an incident in Ballinrobe in which a man suffered serious head injuries in an assault.

A plea has been made to anyone with information to offer assistance to An Garda Síochána with their investigation.

The man was hospitalised with head injuries following an incident that occurred on Tuesday at The Neale Road in the town at around 12.15 p.m.

Local Councillor Michael Burke, at a municipal district meeting yesterday (Wednesday), condemned the attack, saying it was disgraceful that people thought they could do this in broad daylight, at a filling station.

Incidents such as this were rare in the county and out of character for the area and he had a message for those responsible: “You are not welcome in our county.”

Councillor Burke also appealed to anyone with information to come forward and assist the gardaí.

Councillor Damien Ryan supported his area colleague, saying the incident paints the town in a bad light, and what happened is not what Ballinrobe is about.

He, too, asked the public for any assistance they can give to the gardaí.
