Tributes to a great south Mayo GAA stalwart on his passing

The death of Gerry Varley, Creevagh, Cong, has evoked a huge sense of sorrow and loss across the community.

In a tribute, The Neale GAA Club said its members were saddened to learn of Gerry's passing.

It continued: "Gerry was a fantastic character and a great supporter of our club.

"In 1968 Gerry was instrumental in the purchasing of the grounds of the present day pitch.

"He had a long footballing career wearing the green and white of The Neale with pride.

"In 1956 he was on the winning team that won the O'Mara Cup and the South Mayo Junior Championship.

"We all remember Gerry fondly and will miss his car at the pitch.

"His passion for our club was admirable.

"Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilís."

The club extended sympathy to the bereaved family on their loss.

Many warm tributes are also being paid to the deceased, a former member of the staff of Ashford Castle, on the condolences pages of RIP.ie and Midwest Radio.

Predeceased by his brother John, sisters Kitty and Josie, he is deeply regretted by his loving wife Kitty, daughters Karen, Claire and Trish, sons Gerard, Neil and John, brother Mico (Nenagh), sisters Bridie Nalty (Cross), Rita Bane (Tuam), Joan Flannery (Kilmaine) and Rose Corcoran (Thurles), daughters-in-law Maria, Breda and Edel, sons-in-law Ray and Paul. Beloved Goga to Rian, Mollie, Sofia, Maggie, Bella, Conall, Caoimhe, Thomas, Aaron, Kassie, Noah and Amelia, nieces, nephews, neighbours and friends.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.

Reposing at The Crossroads Community Centre, Cong (F31PY97) this evening (Saturday) from 5 o’clock until 7 o’clock.

Removal from his residence on Sunday to Saint Mary’s Church, Cong for Requiem Mass at 11 o’clock with burial afterwards in Lisloughry Cemetery.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.
