Go-ahead for mast in central Mayo town on appeal

EIR has successfully appealed against a decision to refuse permission for its plans to erect a telecommunications mast in Balla.

The company was refused planning permission for a 21-metre high telecommunications support structure together with antennas, dishes and associated equipment at the eir exchange at the rear of Balla Garda Station on Main Street.

Planners in Mayo County Council found that the development would have a negative visual impact on the setting associated with St. Cronan's Church, which is listed on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage. It would interfere with the character of the landscape, which it is necessary to preserve.

Following an appeal by the company, An Bord Pleanála has now overturned that decision.

The board found that the mast would not seriously injure the visual and residential amenities of the area and would not adversely affect the character and setting of St. Cronan's Church.
