Passing of Stephen Callaghan is widely mourned in Mayo

The death has occurred peacefully at Mayo University Hospital of Stephen Callaghan, Kinturk Upper, Ballyheane, and formerly of Lucan Street, Castlebar and Cleveland, Ohio, USA, in his 92nd year.

Stephen was born on Lucan Street, Castlebar, on St. Stephen's Day, December 26, 1931.

Like many of his generation he emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio as a young man. There he had a very successful career as Head Accountant with the City of Parma.

Having returned to Ireland 20 years ago he and his wife Kathleen set up home in Kinturk Upper, Ballyheane. He loved the outdoors and he enjoyed his daily walks in the countryside.

Stephen was an avid reader and kept up with current affairs with the daily and weekly newspapers.

In his younger days he loved horse riding and he was a member of the Parma golf club in Ohio.

His greatest joy were his seven beautiful grandchildren whom he adored. He was a family man and he loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Stephen was predeceased by his parents Dan Callaghan and Mary Ellen (née Killeen) and his siblings Mollie Guthrie, Bridie Bartley, Lillian Callaghan, Josie Walkowiak, Christie Callaghan and Sarah Collins.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Kathleen (née Roche), sons Michael Callaghan (UK) and Peter Callaghan (Castlebar), daughters Sheila Sugden and Catherine Taylor (all UK), his cherished grandchildren Mary Ellen Sugden, Ciara Sugden, Conor Taylor, Kian Callaghan, Aidan Taylor, Elise Callaghan and Scarlett Taylor, his sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and many friends.

Reposing in the Kilcoyne Funeral Home, Thomas Street, Castlebar on Friday, February 10, from 6 to 7.30 p.m.

The funeral will arrive at St. Patrick's Church, Ballyheane on Saturday at 1.45 p.m. for Funeral Mass at 2 p.m.

Afterwards Stephen will be laid to rest in the New Cemetery, Newport Road, Castlebar.
