'Nightmare' prediction at west Mayo bridge on new road
THE assertion that a new bridge on the Lodge Road in Westport is adequate for two lorries to pass is not being accepted.
Councillor Brendan Mulroy said he is being 'inundated' with calls about what is a dangerous situation.
Mayo County Council have said two three metre traffic lanes and a three metre cycle/footpath lane are provided, which is suitable for a 50kph zone.
As well as artic trucks, there would be heavy use of the road by agricultural vehicles over the summer, said Councillor Mulroy.
He predicted it would be a 'nightmare'.
At this stage, he suggested, the footpath could be reduced a little.
Councillor Johnny O'Malley said looking at it, two trucks would not be able to pass, while come summer, mowers would be using the road that are up to 12ft wide.
People thought there would be permanent lights there as there would only be one vehicle going through it, he added.
Director of services Tom Gilligan said he would go back with their concerns, but noted that the contractors are the experts.
