Site meeting to discuss Mayo community's concerns following N5 works

A SITE meeting to discusses issues arising in Islandeady following works on the new road is to take place next week.

Local councillors had proposed blocking the opening of the road in protest if community concerns aren't addressed.

They want to see a stone wall on the entrance to the village off the old N5 restored and for the height of a new land embankment reduced.

At Monday's meeting of Mayo County Council, Councillor Al McDonnell suggested a site meeting with all interested parties, including the council, TII, contractor and local residents.

At yesterday (Wednesday's) Castlebar Municipal District meeting, it was confirmed that a meeting will take place on-site next Wednesday afternoon on the old N5.

Elected members were advised by the cathaoirleach, Councillor Michael Kilcoyne, to draw up a list of other matters they want addressed.

Among those mentioned at the meeting was the condition of some of the local roads used as service roads for the development while Councillor Donna Sheridan highlighted the road passing Castlebar Rugby Club as being 'a disgrace'.

Communities should not be suffering adversely after the N5 project with their side roads, she commented.
