Mayo business sector signs up to eco-friendly initiative
Members of the Castlebar business sector have signed up to a plan supporting a drive to make their work and home environments more eco friendly when it comes to waste management.
The initiative – My Waste commercial water campaign - is being led by Sharon Cameron, environmental awareness officer with Mayo County Council, and has the backing of Castlebar Chamber of Commerce.
The campaign’s ‘My Waste’ website is very useful for correct and up to date information to help people manage waste from their home and business at https://www.mywaste.ie/business/.
In Ireland 70% of the contents of the commercial general waste bin could be redirected to the recycling or food waste bin.
Correct waste segregation can help you save money, ensure you are waste compliant and also help the environment.
There is a section of the website designated for business use which contains really useful resources for businesses of all sizes to help you manage your waste correctly.
Resources include training animations for staff, downloadable posters and also a service where hard copies of good quality posters and bin labels can be ordered for free.
There are also some good testimonials from businesses already using the My Waste Materials, including one from Clarke’s Filling Station in Ballina.
Ms. Cameron has also drawn attention to the website http://www.pollinators.ie where people will find information on increasing biodiversity and protecting bees and other pollinators through simple actions that can be taken in business premises.
These include options for businesses that do not have an outdoor area.
Welcoming the initiative, Bernard Hughes, president, Castlebar Chamber of Commerce, stated: "Our business community are fully supportive of Sharon and Mayo County Council in raising our environmental awareness and what our responsibilities are.
“Apart from being the law this improvement can also potentially save money in our workplace environments."
