Excitement in Mayo as Biden visit to Ireland is announced

EXCITEMENT is growing in Mayo after US President Joe Biden indicated he intends to visit Ireland in the near future.

The visit will mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, with engagements in Northern Ireland and the Republic.

County Mayo is expected to feature on Mr. Biden's itinerary, with a return visit to his ancestral home in north Mayo.

Mr. Biden previously visited Ballina in 2016 when he spent time with family there.

A return visit to coincide with Ballina 2023 - marking the 300th anniversary of the town - would be a huge boost for the year-long celebrations in the north Mayo capital.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, on Twitter this morning, welcomed Mr. Biden's plan to visit the country and said he will be discussing it with him when he meets the President later this week as part of the St. Patrick's Day celebrations.
