The Derrylea Roundabout at Islandeady.

Commission awarded for new Mayo N5 stone art works

A commission has been awarded for art works along the new N5 dual carriageway between Turlough and Westport.

They will be erected at three locations, namely Islandeady, Breaffy and Turlough/Parke, with a budget of €66,000.

Artist James Winnett has put forward a successful proposal, entitled The Touchstones.

It will be a series of large (approximately 1 to 2 tonne) intricately carved stones incorporating imagery, narrative carving and text to foster material connections with the surrounding cultural, social and environmental context.

Meanwhile, works on the Derrylea, Islandeady, to Dublin Road, Turlough, section of the new N5 is progressing very well and the finishing touches to the mainline are being done.

But some works remain to be carried out on the sideroads and as a result of the recent Road Safety Audit before substantial completion can be achieved for this section.

It is anticipated, however, that this section will be opened to traffic soon.
