Appeal for garda cameras at key north Mayo spots to deter criminals
An appeal has been issued for garda CCTV cameras to be erected at strategic locations in north Mayo to deter criminals from entering the area from outside the region.
Councillor Gerry Coyle said a burglary took place at a property in the Erris area a number of weeks ago and nobody was arrested for the crime.
He stated: "I thought that once the alert went out that the setting up of a roadblock between Erris and Castlebar or Ballina would have been effective.
"Because Erris is remote, it should be easier to police in that respect, especially when criminals are entering the district from outside.
"I believe the erection of garda cameras at Bellacorrick Bridge would be a very effective tool in fighting crime in this region."
He was addressing his comment to Division Garda Chief Superintendent Raymond McMahon.
In response, the garda officer said it would be very helpful for investigating teams.
But new legislation is currently going through the Oireachtas to allow An Garda Siochána to take this course of action.
When the legislation is signed into law, it will be considered.
