Castlebar Military Barracks.

Plan to improve Mayo town centre site 'moving at snail's pace'

by Auld Stock

IN this weary world of ours some matters move at a slow pace, particularly when it comes to government backed projects.

It is a good few years since Mayo County Council purchased the Military Barracks, a wonderful piece of infrastructure smack in the centre of Castlebar.

Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien has written to the council about proposed alterations to Castlebar town centre.

The Military Barracks, along with the old post office on Ellison Street and other buildings, were designated to form what has been described as a core development in the centre of Castlebar.

A wonderful idea.

However, the scheme is progressing at snail’s pace.

Councillors are anxious to see the major development scheme in Castlebar go ahead in the quickest possible time.

So are the people of the county capital.

Perhaps, at last, we will see positive progress in this major revamp of the centre of Castlebar.

Don’t hold your breath!
