Mayo on-street cleaning at "an unacceptable standard"

AN elected representative has said that on-street cleaning in Mayo is “not to an acceptable standard."

The comments were made by Councillor Peter Flynn at the Environment, Climate Action, Agriculture and Emergency Services strategic policy committee following a presentation by regional waste by co-ordinator Kevin Swift on the National Waste Management for a Circular Economy.

A circular economy aims to eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials (at their highest value), and regenerate nature.

When Councillor Flynn asked what a circular economy meant for people generally in the way they manage waste, Mr. Swift said it would have an impact on producers as they can only put materials on the market that can be recycled

Councillor Flynn said it was not too long ago that we all threw things into a bin with no thought to recycling and there had been incredible progress in the last ten years.

However, he said that it wasn’t reflected in the county on-street cleaning services, which has gone downhill.

“Our budgets under-provides for street-cleaning,” he added.
