Works to improve safety on street in west Mayo town

SAFETY works on Georges Street in Newport will get underway later this year.

Pedestrian safety on the street, existing the town in the direction of Achill, has been a source of concern for some time, especially for children attending the local national school.

Members of the Georges Street Concern Group attended the monthly Westport-Belmullet Municipal District meeting where a report on works to improve the situation was welcomed.

The works are due to commence in quarter three of this year, the meeting was told, and the local community and councillors will be kept briefed on key milestones as the project progresses.

Councillor Paul McNamara urged that the project would push on and resolve the issues in this busy, dangerous area.

The Georges Street group were complimented by Councillor Peter Flynn who said without their pressure they would not be at this point.
