Mayo-based writer Alice Kinsella to host Motherhood and Madness event at Linenhall

THE world of literature plays a central role at the Linenhall Arts Centre, and with the first drafts of Milk: On Motherhood and Madness having been developed there by Mayo-based writer Alice Kinsella, it is very proud to host the Motherhood and Madness event at the Castlebar venue this Wednesday, April 5.

Celebrating Milk’s launch and marking the special connection, Alice Kinsella will be in conversation with fellow Irish writer, author and podcaster Sophie White and author Una Mannion, who moderates on the night.

A powerful and yet delicate mix of the personal and political, Milk is an unflinching and unique memoir that looks at the experience of motherhood against the backdrop of a seemingly changed Ireland.

Books Ireland have hailed it as ‘a genre defying book destined to become a cult classic’.

Sophie White, author of Recipes for a Nervous Breakdown and Unfiltered, also writes for The Sunday Independent, currently with her weekly column, Nobody Tells You for LIFE magazine. Sligo-based Mannion’s debut novel, A Crooked Tree, was published in 2021. Nominated for several high profile awards, it won the 2022 Kate O’Brien Prize.

CHILDREN'S EVENTS AND FILM

To other Linenhall events, and always keeping young audiences in mind, there is a dynamic treat in store with Kyle Riley’s show Little Folk On The Road on Saturday, April 8.

Perfect for children aged between two and seven years, each attendee receives their own goodie bag of musical instruments to play alongside Kyle Riley’s award-winning and original children’s music.

Inspired by the Linenhall gallery's current exhibition, A Common Thread, are family designed workshop opportunities on April 5. At these Easter break art sessions, children and their adults will be guided by the Linenhall's community artists on how to create together. Although donations to cover material costs are appreciated, the workshops are free.

Cinematically, the Linenhall Film Club continues on Tuesday, April 11, with The Cry of Granuaile, a genre defying blend of psychodrama and fantasy. Directed by Dónal Foreman, it tells the tale of a grieving American cinematographer as she embarks on a researching quest into the infamous Pirate Queen.

NIALL MCCABE

Back on home turf, Clare Island native Niall McCabe takes to the Linenhall stage on Thursday, April 20. One of Ireland’s rising stars, the singer and songwriter has already created an excellent reputation with Irish-trad fusion band Beoga but is now pursuing an exciting solo career.

As part of Beoga, McCabe performed with Ed Sheeran and Foy Vance, but his own unique and hauntingly beautiful sound is what sets him apart.

Booking early will avoid disappointment.
