Negotiations to restore wall removed during N5 Mayo works ongoing

NEGOTIATIONS to restore a wall removed in Islandeady as part of the new N5 road are ongoing.

It is hoped the matter will be finalised this week.

Local Councillor Martin McLoughlin raised the wall with management at a meeting of Mayo County Council yesterday (Monday).

“It rumbles on,” he said, and nothing has been done.

A site meeting had taken place where councillors and management met community council representatives but they were disappointed that there was a no show from the Regional Design Office or Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

During construction of the N5 the wall had been removed by the contractor. It was the expectation of the local people that it would be restored as it was, he said.

He was disappointed to see nothing has happened and they have had no feedback since the meeting at the beginning of March.

“The people are concerned they are being pushed to one side and forgotten about,” said Councillor McLoughlin.

Director of services Tom Gilligan told him they are still in negotiations about the wall and he hoped that would be finalised this week.

Councillor Blackie Gavin informed him that the wall should be retained, otherwise they would block the road when the Taoiseach comes down to open the new route.
