A building originally earmarked as a business facility at the N5 Business Park in Moneen, Castlebar, is being transformed into a new centre for international protection residents.

Works underway on new Mayo centre for international protection residents

WORKS have commenced on renovating a major derelict property in Castlebar and converting it into a centre for international protection residents.

Over 50 units are being put in place in a spacious development at the N5 Business Park at Moneen in the town - a premises that was originally earmarked as a business centre.

Over 200 people currently residing at the Breaffy Sports Arena will be transferred to the location when works are completed.

The works include the creation of a new pedestrian access to the footpath at Moneen Road leading to the town centre.

Behind the project is Primbrook Limited and catering and other facilities will be provided by Breaffy House Resort when the facility is fully operational.

The Breaffy Sports Arena will also be retained as a centre for international protection applicants.

Tom Gilligan, director of housing services at Mayo County Council, welcomed the development of the new facility and the fact it is bringing a significant derelict building back into use.

He said Mayo's new residents were making a valuable contribution to the community and many schools and businesses in the locality were benefiting.

"Our duty of care during a time of humanitarian crisis has been very good," he added.
