€2.24m. for Mayo local authority home loans

MAYO County Council approved 19 local authority home loans last year.

There were seven in the Claremorris/Swinford Municipal District, two in Castlebar, and five each in Ballina and the Westport/Belmullet MD. Nine applications were refused, with two overturned on appeal.

The figures were given to elected members when they were asked to approve borrowings for this year's loan scheme to the tune of €2.24 million.

The loans cater for people who can't get social housing and yet don't qualify for a mortgage from a bank.

Councillor Donna Sheridan noted how based on the figure above, the council could only allocate nine loans.

She was told if there is demand for more, application can be made to the department to extend the scheme.
