New water station will reduce use of plastic bottles in south Mayo town

A NEW initiative will see a reduction in the use of single use plastic bottles in Claremorris.

Claremorris Tidy Towns, supported by Councillors Richard Finn and Tom Connolly, Pobal funding and Mayo County Council, have installed a public water station for the town.

The initiative, by Claremoris Tidy Towns, seeks to raise awareness about our excessive use of single use plastic bottles in Ireland as well as helping to promote the circular economy.

It will also enhance the lovely Clare Lake/McMahon Park amenity, including the Land of the Giants and the new Mayfield Lake looped walk.

Single use plastic products are used once, or for a short period of time, before being thrown away. According to Refill Ireland, 220,000 single use plastic water bottles are generated in Ireland every day and Irish people spend €100 million on these bottles every year.

“We see this water station as another great addition/facility for Claremorris town. Given the increasing footfall at this family friendly area, it is hoped that this water tap will increase awareness of our over consumption of single use plastic bottles and enhance the experience of those using the park and the walks nearby,” said Pauline Flynn of Claremorris Tidy Towns.

This latest refill water station is located at the playground/Clare Lake amenity in Claremorris with a second one located at Claremorris Leisure Centre on Dalton Street.
