Mayo Peace Park repairs being costed

A REPORT is being prepared for the council on the Mayo Peace Park in Castlebar, which requires repair works.

Final costings are not yet available but it was flagged at a municipal district meeting that it will involve 'serious money'.

At this stage, the site is not viewed as being dangerous and repair options will be looked at.

The Mayo Peace Park committee have raised their concerns with Mayo County Council.

Director of services John Condon told a municipal meeting said the site has been looked at and the issues appear to be around settlement rather than subsidence.

They did not see a danger and there was no need to close the park, he stated.

The options for repairing it were going to be looked at and the early indications are that it will be expensive because of the way it is constructed.

In other years money had been allocated through GMA but there was none this year.

The thinking was that it will involve 'serious money' but when final costings were done, funding streams could be considered through the council or the committee.

Councillor Blackie Gavin highlighted issues at the site - slabs are coming apart and there are huge cracks in the main wall. The back wall also didn't look to be in good shape, he said, and the bricks at the back are shrinking.

He wanted an assessment done urgently and a report before them for their next meeting.

Councillor Ger Deere said it would be a 'shame on us' if the matter wasn't resolved. They couldn't let it deteriorate and owed it to the families of those commemorated there to do something.

The question of examining the insurance standing or guarantee from when it was built was suggested by Councillor Donna Sheridan.
