Two expressions of interest in taking over old west Mayo courthouse

TWO expressions of interest have been received in relation to using the old courthouse building in Westport.

The building, which is a protected structure, has been closed for a decade, with ownership having transferred to Mayo County Council.

The council sought expressions of interest from groups interested in taking over the property. Two were received.

At a municipal district meeting, Councillor Peter Flynn said it was a crying shame what has been allowed happen to the courthouse.

He was concerned that any of the organisations interested in it would not have the financial backing to take it on.

Director of services Catherine McConnell said there had been two strong expressions received, and one has given a strong assurance that they can progress it.

They were coming back to the council about a licensing arrangement, which would allow them access funding which the council can't. They were confident about their long-term plan.

Ms. O'Connell said they would go through the options of what is being proposed with the elected members at a workshop.
