Forkan ratified as candidate to fill vacant Mayo council seat

KILTIMAGH man Adrian Forkan will be officially proposed as the candidate to fill the vacant councillor position on Mayo County Council when the authority meets on Monday.

He was the unanimous choice to replace Michael Smyth, who has retired, when Fianna Fáil members met to ratify a candidate in the Gateway Hotel in Swinford last evening.

His candidacy for co-option to the local authority will be on the agenda for Monday's full council meeting for formal approval.

With no other candidates put forward, Forkan was selected unopposed by FF party members to progress to the next stage in appointing a new councillor.

As well as filling the vacant FF seat, there are nine committee places to be filled at Monday's meeting, positions previously held by Smyth, who served on the council for the last nine years.

The attendance at last night's meeting included Minister Dara Calleary, Senator Lisa Chambers, Senator Eugene Murphy and Councillor John Caulfield.
