Mayo County Council welcomes its newest member

MAYO County Council has welcomed its newest member.

Kiltimagh's Adrian Forkan was formally proposed and co-opted on to the local authority as a Fianna Fáil councillor at the monthly meeting on Monday afternoon.

Councillor Damian Ryan, in proposing him to fill the position left vacant following the retirement of Councillor Michael Smyth, said Forkan was a man who is deeply immersed in the community in Kiltimagh and Swinford through both the GAA and soccer and it was an honour to have someone of his calibre joining the council.

Kilkelly-based Councillor John Caulfield said his new colleague was steeped in the community through sport and other developments and he would serve the area with zest and a commitment to further it as best he could.

Councillors from Fine Gael and the Independent seats also extended welcome to Councillor Forkan and members of his family, who attended the meeting.

His Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District colleague, Councillor Neil Cruise (FG), said the area councillors always put party politics aside in the MD and work for the betterment of the area.

Tribute was also paid to Michael Smyth for his nine years service on the council.

Councillor Forkan said he had been behind Smyth over the last number of years as his director of elections.

He thanked his family for their support and the people of Swinford and Kiltimagh for the unanimous trust they had placed in him to fill the seat.

Working as a team is what he will be doing.
