A number of playgrounds around the county have been allocated funding.

Mayo County Council welcomes community recognition funding

MAYO County Council has welcomed the announcement of over €2,254,126 in funding this week as part of the newly launched Community Recognition Fund, administered through the Department of Rural and Community Development.

The major initiative is designed to support and reward communities that have welcomed families and citizens from Ukraine and other countries.

The projects range from large scale multi-purpose sports facilities, upgrades to community centres, equipment for sports clubs, outdoor walkways, playgrounds, community buses and equipment for festivals.

In total, 48 different projects from right across the county will share in the funding which the objective to aid initiatives that positively impact individuals of various age groups in the community.

Welcoming the funding, the cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Councillor Seamus Weir, said: “I very much welcome the announcement of this funding. It is going to have a very positive and long-lasting impact in communities right across the county and is great recognition of them opening their doors and hearts to those who needed it most.”

Chief executive of Mayo County Council, Kevin Kelly added: “This is very positive news for many communities in Mayo. Mayo County Council is delighted to see such a wide variety of projects receive funding under this scheme and we will continue to work side by side with community groups to access funding from as many streams as possible.”

Deirdre Finnerty, head of community engagement for Mayo County Council, added: “The projects approved were developed in direct engagement with impacted communities and in consultation with the Municipal Districts, Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) and the local Community Response Fora. We look forward to working with these communities to deliver this much needed investment.”
