Mayo Day 2023 was a resounding success

MAYO Day 2023 was a resounding success, with 20,000 people attending the flagship event in Ballina, and over nine million people engaging on social media across the world.

Attention is now turning to the 10th anniversary celebrations of Mayo Day next year.

Members of Mayo County Council's Corporate, Education, Culture, Heritage and Library Services Strategic Policy Committee were updated on the event at a meeting by Martina Hughes, head of corporate development and communications.

Mayo Dayo, she said, brings a sense of pride into the host area, and the feedback this year was that it was a superb event, with Ballina alive with activities. The businesses who showcased on the day also gave hugely positive feedback.

Engaging with the diaspora is a big part of Mayo Day and there was engagement in 20 countries across the world this year.

It is hoped to bring Mayo Day to the next step in 2024 when the event celebrates its 10th anniversary, and discussions on that are already underway, including building on the legacy of the Home to Mayo initiative and strengthening twinning connections and also implementing a quarterly diaspora news update.

Cathaoirleach Councillor Michael Burke said it had been a fantastic month for Mayo, with Mayo Day and the visit of President Joe Biden.
