Eir taken to task over collapsing manhole covers in Mayo's county town

A CASTLEBAR councillor has taken Eir to task over collapsing manhole covers in the town.

The latest one occurred at Spencer Street yesterday morning.

“This has become a regular occurrence around the streets of Castlebar and is an issue I have raised previously,” Councillor Ger Deer highlighted.

“I have asked Mayo County Council to instruct Eir to carry out an audit on all such manhole covers and replace faulty ones.”

Some of the covers like the one on Spencer Street are decades old and were installed over 30 years ago when Eir was known as the P&T, said Councillor Deere.

“The audit and replacement I have called for needs to happen urgently before someone gets seriously injured,” he added.
