Mayo TY student a winner in national Construction Industry Federation competition

A TRANSITION year student at St. Colman’s College, Claremorris, has won third place in a national video competition organised by the Construction Industry Federation (CIF).

‘Constructing Your Future’ is a national competition developed by the organisation to highlight the exciting opportunities available to young people through a career in the construction sector.

TY student Sean Colgan was awarded for his video diary of his work experience with construction company Coffey.

Speaking about his win, Sean said: “I am delighted to have done this competition as it helped me narrow down my career choices and gave me a great idea of what working as a team is like inside a company like Coffey as we worked together to create the video.”

Dermot Carey, director of safety and training at CIF, said Sean’s video gave a really clear and comprehensive outline of what he learned and achieved during his work experience given his interest in engineering.

“He showed a keen interest to learn but also a strong ability to communicate and share ideas, which is a vital part of so many careers within the construction sector. I have no doubt Sean has a great career ahead of him,” he said.

Mr. Carey also commended Coffey for hosting Sean and giving him such a positive and varied work experience.

He said: “Feedback within the construction sector consistently highlights the challenges facing companies and businesses to recruit enough staff in recent years. Across Ireland there are second-level students looking for work experience every single year. Local builders and construction companies are well placed to nurture local talent, show them what options are available and encourage them into the industry.

“Coffey must be congratulated for taking the time and making the effort to support young people into the industry.”
