Enhanced 2023 Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance for Mayo families

Mayo Fine Gael TD Alan Dillon has announced, in conjunction with the Minister for Social Protection, Heather Humphreys, the opening of applications for the enhanced 2023 Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance.

The allowance, a lifeline for many families, provides a one-time payment to assist with the cost of school clothing and footwear.

Reflecting ongoing cost of living challenges, the 2023 rates have been increased by €100 per child. This means families can now expect €260 for children aged between four and 11 and €385 for children aged 12 and over in second-level education.

Deputy Dillon said: “I am delighted to see that the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance for 2023 is now open for applications. I recognise the pressures that families are under in relation to back-to-school costs and pleased that government have secured almost €90 million for the scheme this year.”

More than 120,000 families are expected to automatically receive the allowance during the week commencing July 10. These families will receive a notification on their MyWelfare account or by post. The Department of Social Protection is currently processing these payments, which will see approximately €70 million being distributed during the week beginning July 10.

Deputy Dillon added: “As in previous years, more than 80% of payments under this scheme will be paid without the need to make an application. The Department of Social Protection will issue automatic payments to more than 120,000 families in July, and I would urge all families to check their eligibility for this important scheme.”

Those who do not receive a notification should apply online at www.MyWelfare.ie even if they received a payment last year. Online applications can be made starting from today (Thursday, June 8).
