Mayo speed limit review to be completed in 2024

A REVIEW of speed limits in Mayo is underway and will be completed by early 2024. Members of the public will be invited to make submissions later this year.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland is not recommending any changes in speed limits on national roads in the county. They consider their views from a previous assessment to be still valid.

The issue of speed limits at some schools has been raised by members of the public with Councillor Cyril Burke, who highlighted it at a roads committee meeting.

Councillor Seamus Weir has also previously raised concerns by way of a notice of motion and he hoped to see reductions implemented.

An example he highlighted was on the N26 approach into Ballina where there are several junctions, including one for Raheen school.

The speed limit is 100kph, he said, but it made sense to reduce it at this location. That is what the public had requested.

An issue with areas where there are safety concerns is that many accidents are not reported to the gardaí, the meeting heard. There is no hard data then available to support safety concerns.
