Turlough House

Ten reasons to visit Mayo's Museum of Country Life

THIS summer, be sure to include a visit to the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life on your day trip list. There is lots to see and do, with something for all ages.

Here are our 10 things to enjoy this summer. Find out more at www.museum.ie.

1. Go on a vibrant new art trail through the grounds of Turlough Park for On Sight 2023. The artworks take inspiration from bees and St. Gobnait, their patron saint.

2. Visit a new exhibition inspired by Mayo’s lakes as seen from above. This exhibition of ceramic reliefs by Annaliese Brown is on display in the Courtyard Gallery (next to the café).

3. Be inspired by the intricate detail of A Breath of Fresh Air - The Keep Well Glass Quilt, which is on display in Turlough Park House. This beautiful play on the idea of a patchwork quilt was undertaken by members of the Glass Society of Ireland during the Covid lockdown.

4. Step back in time and immerse yourself in the lifestyles, customs and traditions of rural Ireland on weekly guided tours - Saturday or Sunday throughout July.

5. Learn how to research your family tree with the members of Mayo Genealogy Group. This group meets on the second Saturday of each month to discuss and share their keen interest in genealogy.

6. Enjoy a fun and educational outdoor activity with a free, guided nature walk on various dates throughout July. Suitable for families, admission is free.

7. Combine your museum visit with a cycle on the 10k Castlebar to Turlough Greenway, which finishes in the spectacular grounds of Turlough Park.

8. Visit Turlough Park House - originally the home of the Fitzgerald family, to whom the estate was granted under the Cromwellian land settlements of the mid-17th century. Pick up your guide at reception.

9. Learn a new skill - come along to a meeting of the knitting circle - from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the first and third Friday of the month. Just drop by.

10. Enjoy a sweet treat at the museum café, located in the courtyard. Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or a sweet treat, Synge & Byrne Café is the perfect place to relax and recharge.

Admission to the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life is free. Galleries are open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday to Monday from 1 to 5 p.m.
