Mayo lifeboat crew commended for role in yacht rescue

ACHILL Island RNLI crew members have received a commendation for their role in the rescue of a yacht drifting off the west coast last year.

The commendation made on behalf of RNLI chief executive, Mark Dowie, recognised the part they played in the rescue of a lone sailor whose 40-foot racing yacht experienced mechanical difficulties 42 nautical miles west of Achill Island in May 2022.

The yacht had lost steering with its headsail partially up, causing the vessel to be uncontrollable in moderate seas.

The crew on the Achill Island RNLI lifeboat, 'Sam and Ada Moody', located the yacht 10 nautical miles from its last know position, and, after ensuring the welfare of the sailor, towed it to the safety of Clare Island.

The professional actions of the crew on the night ensured the sailor's life was saved, and the RNLI made the commendations to acknowledge the determination and commitment of the crew during this overnight call-out.

The presentation took place in Patten's Bar and was attended by a large gathering of family and friends of the crew. Rob King, area lifesaving manager, and Helena Duggan, assessor trainer, were also in attendance, representing the RNLI.

In making the presentations, Helena said: “It is an honour to present the lifeboat crew at Achill Island RNLI with their Chief Executive Commendations for the rescue of a lone sailor in May 2022.

"This challenging 14-hour rescue was carried out with incredible precision and teamwork by the lifeboat crew who answered the call. Everyone involved can be proud of their actions that night, which resulted in a life saved.

“I know how hard the crew train to be ready for every eventuality, not knowing if the next call out might be a life saved.”
